La Caccina Educational Residencies

Inspire the next generation of musical leaders by bringing La Caccina to your studio, ensemble, or audience!

La Caccina residencies incorporate discussion, demonstration, and hands-on participation that will engage and inspire students of all ages and ability levels.

Choose a single session for a half-day workshop, or craft a longer residency by adding on a masterclass in conducting or choral singing, or a roundtable discussion with the Caccinas. Sessions can be tailored to meet the specific needs of your program, and all residencies can be combined with a performance by La Caccina.

Sessions

Feminist Choral Leadership (in person or virtual)

What does it mean to lead from a feminist perspective? In this workshop, La Caccina artists will discuss the ways in which feminism influences and strengthens all aspects of collaborative music-making, from rehearsal to performance, and from marketing to development. This residency addresses both artistry and entrepreneurship, and is perfect for students looking to pursue a career in music.

Ensemble-Building and Musicianship (in person)

In this workshop, students will have the opportunity to develop musical independence, ear-training, and versatility as an ensemble singer. Working directly with La Caccina artists, singers will discuss voicing and timbre, adapt their voices to different musical styles, and develop healthy singing strategies no matter what genre they’re working in. Students will work both in their large ensemble, and in smaller groups for more individual attention.

Composer’s Forum – Writing for Treble Voices (in person or virtual)

In this masterclass-style workshop, composers will learn about the unique opportunities and challenges of writing for treble voices. La Caccina artists will demonstrate compositional techniques and pitfalls using some of our favorite repertoire, then workshop new pieces with composers, suggesting and implementing changes in real time.

Masterclasses and Add-Ons

Roundtable Discussion (in person or virtual)

Join La Caccina artists for a roundtable discussion and Q&A. Learn about our mission to expand the treble canon and elevate underrepresented voices in choral music, discuss the importance of women in the arts, and ask questions of our artists.

Conducting (in person)

Work closely with La Caccina Artistic Director, Carling FitzSimmons, to develop and hone conducting skills. This masterclass can be tailored for any level of conducting student, and might range from lab work (without an ensemble) to a full clinic in front of the ensemble.

Blend and Vocal Independence (in person)

Delve more deeply into the qualities that make a good ensemble singer. This masterclass is the perfect complement to the Ensemble-Building and Musicianship workshop, and allows singers to work more closely with La Caccina artists in smaller groups on specific repertoire.

Performances

The Matriarchy

This program honors women from around the world and across time, and celebrates their accomplishments and contributions to our world today, even while their stories remain unwritten in the history books. Featured composers include Alysia Lee, Moira Smiley, Sydney Guillaume, Zanaida Stewart Robles, Jessie Montgomery, and commissions by Melissa Dunphy and Marie-Claire Saindon.

BECOMING

Featuring songs from our third studio album, this program celebrates the beauty inherent in change. Featuring a variety of pieces from throughout the ages, including some rarely-heard works by Renaissance composer Paschal de l’Estocart, this concert celebrates the virtuosity of each individual voice and the deep collaborative ties within the ensemble.

Groundbreakers

This concert celebrates the versatile power of women and acknowledge the ways in which their work makes the road ahead a little smoother for us all.  From Rosephanye Powell's haunting arrangement of Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child to Joan Szymko's joyful She Who Makes Her Meaning Clear to a commissioned work from Chicago composer Kyra Leigh, the pieces in this varied and beautiful program honor the groundbreakers.
